Abdomen
The part of the trunk that lies between the thorax and the pelvis. This anatomical term does not include the vertebral region posteriorly but is considered by some anatomists to include the pelvis (abdominopelvic cavity).
Abduct
To move away from the median plane
Aberrant
Wandering off or differing from the normal. This term is used of certain ducts, vessels, or neves deviating from the normal course or pattern.
Abscess
A collection of purulent exudate that appears in an acute or chronic localized infection that is circumscribed by the body's defense systems. This cavity is also caused by tissue destruction and frequently associated with swelling and other signs of inflammation.
Accessory
In anatomy, denoting certain muscles, nerves, glands that are supernumerary to some similar body part often sharing a similar function
Adduct
To draw toward the median plane
Adenopathy
Swelling or morbid enlargement of the lymph nodes.
Adhesion
Inflammatory bands that connect opposing serous surfaces- In the abdomen these connections make the loops of intestine stick together which make operations more difficult and more dangerous
Adrenal Gland
A gland near or upon the kidney that produces hormones that affect sex, sugar and salt balance
Adventitia
The outermost connective tissue covering of any organ, vessel, or other structure not covered by a serosa
