Conditions and diseases that can lead to dehydration include diarrhea, vomiting, hyperthermia, cholera and yellow fever. Symptoms of dehydration include loss of appetite, dryness of skin, fatigue, increase in heart rate, low blood pressure, and dizziness. Treatment includes restoring the amount of water and electrolytes that have been lost.

The procedures vary with the underlying philosophies that guide the various medical systems as well as the objective of detoxification which could be removal of metabolic toxins, removing drugs from the system, alcohol detox, etc. Detox techniques in alternative medicine include herbal and electromagnetic therapies, dieting, body cleansing, oil pulling, etc. Dialysis and chelation therapy are two detox techniques used in conventional medicine.
