Surgical societies connect medical professionals and researchers who are either surgeons or a part of the surgical staff. The societies aim to provide their members with opportunities to develop networks between surgeons in the same field as well as different fields. Members have access to new knowledge and the latest research results which play an important role in the betterment of the industry and patient well-being.

Surgical societies can be formed around specializations they gather their membership from the ranks of surgeons who are specialized in the field or specific procedure.  

The surgical societies’ role in improvement of medical standards, and the understanding of the science and technology that is often behind it, is one of the main drivers of the medical advancements today.

ASMBS: American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

The vision of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) is to improve public health and well-being by lessening the burden of the disease of obesity and related diseases throughout the world. The purpose of the society is to advance the art and science of metabolic and bariatric surgery by continued encouragement of its members to improve the care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases, advance science and foster communication.

AAS: Association for Academic Surgery

The AAS (Association for Academic Surgery) was founded in 1967 and has grown significantly over the years being widely recognized as an inclusive surgical organization with over 2,500 member surgeons. The impetus of the membership remains research-based academic surgery. Active members have traditionally held faculty appointments at a recognized academic center.

SLS: Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons

SLS is the largest Minimally Invasive or Laparoscopic Society in North America and perhaps worldwide with over 6000 active members. Many Laparoscopic and MIS specialties are represented; the main three are Surgical Endoscopy, Gyn Laparoscopy, and Endourology. SLS’ focus is multispecialty, providing a multidisciplinary education by giving a comprehensive view that is more inline with better physician orientation and patient outcome.

The SSAT (Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract) was incorporated on March 30, 1960 and has objectives including to stimulate, foster, and provide surgical leadership in the art and science of patient care. The Society also dedicates itself to teaching and research of the diseases and functions of the alimentary tract.

SAGES: Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons

SAGES (The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) mission is to provide leadership in surgery, particularly gastrointestinal and endoscopic sugery, to optimize patient care through education, research and innovation. Minimal access/non-invasive technology and techniques is defined as diagnostic or therapeutic flexible endoscopy, laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic image-guided and energy-assisted modalities and thoracoscopy as they relate to gastrointestinal or abdominal disease.
