Every good weight-loss plan begins with adjusting the diet and implementing an exercise routine to expend stored up energy sources. It may seem hard or expensive to exercise in a large urban area like New York City, but this belief is far from the truth. New York City offers a variety of exercise options that take advantage of the outdoors and cost next to nothing.

Join the walking program in the city or go hiking on trails; these present the perfect opportunity to get outside and get moving on the way to a healthier lifestyle. Water sports, like swimming or kayaking, are a great way to speed up metabolism, tone muscle and spend calories. In addition, free fitness classes can be found around the city and are easy on the budget, but not so easy on the excess weight. In the great city of New York, it’s always possible to find a way to exercise and enjoy losing weight.

New York City offers a plethora of exercise options and fitness facilities. While most private gyms require a class and or membership fee, New York has many free (or almost free) options. A very important part of starting an exercise program is breaking down barriers to exercise and excuses. While many will blame time or economics as a reason to avoid exercising, the many locations around all five boroughs can provide something for everyone. Please start off slow and consider variety in order to strengthen all muscle groups and keep things interesting. Most important, please try to have fun!

Shape Up New York

Shape Up NYC offers free fitness classes every week at dozens of locations and recreation centers across the five boroughs. You do not need to be a member of the recreation center to attend the class.  Shape Up NYC classes are taught by expert fitness instructors and offerings include aerobics, yoga, pilates and zumba.

Walk NYC

While everyone living in New York City believes that he or she walks a lot, walking as an exercise plan requires that you increase your current level of activity. An organized walking program can provide greater motivation as well as reinforcement from the other participants. Walk NYC is a free program that encourages New Yorkers of all ages to get fit while enjoying the outdoors. Parks staff locations throughout the city with trained walking instructors to lead one-hour walks.

New York Hiking Trails

The many hiking trails surrounding New York City provide an excellent opportunity for exercise. Hiking is a varied form of exercise that provides a good mental escape from some of the rigors of city life. Moreover the uneven terrain in some hiking trails challenges the body to use more of its core muscles to stabilize.

Kayaking around NYC

The New York City Water Trail connects 160 square miles of rivers, bays, creeks, inlets and ocean in the five boroughs suitable for kayaks, canoes, and open-water rowing craft.

NYC Public Pools

New York City has both indoor and outdoor public pools available. Some pools have dedicated lap swim hours at both early hours and late at night so that you can exercise around your work schedule.
